Today , was a little different from normal days
Apart from the fact that no transportation was available all around the center and I had to walk for 30 minutes to the MC office, my picturesque view of the National Parliament building was dotted with around 200 yellow cabs or more along with a huge gathering of taxi drivers in united protest. As I type, I can hear the representative of parliament talking through the microphone in an attempt to reassure the crowd. Police sirens, road block signs and photographers and journalists- ..and in the middle of all this chaos the Sofia Cathedral bells ring..
the energy around me is a little different today
Here is what the Sofia News Agency has to say about today
' Crime: 9 February 2007, Friday.
Rallying taxi drivers apologized to the citizens of the capital for causing them inconveniences early on Friday, but vowed to be firm in their protests. The protest came in the wake of the murder of a taxi driver in Sofia last night and is gaining in scope and momentum. The taxi drivers demand legislative guarantees for their security at work and insist that they meet with the Interior and Transport Minister.Hundreds of Sofia citizens failed to arrive at their workplace on Friday morning as the crossroads in front of Sofia University, Eagle's bridge, the parliament and the busiest boulevard Tsarigradsko Shosse were sealed off by the protest.Emil Emilov, 51, employee of OK Supertrans company, was stabbed to death shortly after 2 am while driving his taxi. The killers are suspected to have been his clients...... '
Here is what my friend fellow blogaholic Ira has written about the events around us ...
' It is extremely silent this morning on my usual way to work.
Why?Cause there is no traffic! You might think the centre is closed cause today at 11.00 there will be processions marking eight years since the Bulgarian medics in Libya were accused of infecting over 400 children with HIV/AIDS and ever since have been kept imprisioned although it was proven that they are innocent.Nothing of a kind!
A taxi driver was killed by, probably, a customer tonight at 3 a.m. As a result taxi drivers from all over Sofia have blocked the whole city centre causing a complete mess in public transport, making hundreds of people nervous and late for work..I heard three different opinions on the radio this morning - one person saying they want parking places for taxis, another one said they want lower taxes and the third one said they want better work conditions!...'

Hey Geri,
I heard you were in Bulgaria - that's quite far out! :) What has the experience been like?
