India's largest aluminium producer, Hindalco Industries, has agreed to buy its US-Canadian rival Novelis for $5.9bn (£3bn) in an all-cash deal. Novelis is the world's largest producer of rolled aluminium and its customers include Coca-Cola and the world's largest canmaker Rexam.

Videocon Industries, an Indian consumer electronics and appliance group has acquired the French giant Thomson SA's entire global colour tube manufacturing business, including units in China, Poland and Mexico for an estimated 240 mn euros.

On August 15th 2005 , Global Steel Holdings Limited (GSHL) , owned by Indian- Ispat Industries acquired Bulgarian Finmetals holding, which owned 71% of largest Bulgarian metallurgical plant - Kremikovtzi.

Indian firm Tata Steel won the bid to take over Anglo-Dutch steelmaker Corus. Shares in Corus closed up nearly 7% at 601.5 pence in London as investors welcomed the outcome of the bid battle. The Tata Group - which owns Tetley tea and Daewoo trucks - has operations in more than 50 countries.

Steel group Arcelor has accepted the £18.5bn ($34bn) offer from Indian owned firm Mittal Steel.The move merges the world's two largest steel companies.

According to an estimate, Indian firms took over more than 75 international companies last year.
